A mom asks for holistic medicinal advice for fending off an awful, 4-week chest cough that’s so bad it causes throw-up and wants to avoid over the counter cough suppressants.  She is doing a nasal flush which is helping at least to give her breathing ability in her nose so she won’t trigger coughing as much. But it’s not lasting very long.

We are on the same boat right now Chloraseptic has been working for mine

You could consider acupuncture and Chinese Medicine. We have so many great providers in this county!

We have been using Vicks steam inhaler thing. Works great. Warm tea with ginger, lime or lemon, and honey. Plus my son takes elderberry gummy every day for immune boosting.

Sage tea

Shawna at A Little Less Toxic has a homemade cough elixir recipe: https://www.alittlelesstoxic.com/cough-elixir/.  Haven’t personally tried it, but have heard good things.

Elecampane helped tremendously when my son could not get rid of his cough.

Give her some fresh Pineapple or pineapple juice! The bromelain breaks up the mucus.

There is a supportive herb to heal the lungs: mullein. It takes few days but it works.

Holistic version of Vicks is Olive oil and Peppermint or Eucalyptus oil whichever you prefer.

Also hot showers and put Peppermint on the wall and you get a steam room with essential oils. Also a sauna and steam room combo is great for lungs clarity. Also it might sound strange but inversion therapy,  helps me all the time.

Lobelia root

Also, your child should be assessed for asthma I think. Do you have a humidifier? My kid had to use steroids, it finally helped. I would see another doctor for second opinion.

Benzonatate it helps the coughing, the doctor should have given her something like this if it is severe enough to make her throw up. [Read about Benzonatate, Mayo Clinic.]

If you are giving her tea with honey please use a high grade of manuka honey.

My daughter ended up in the ER with similar symptoms. They prescribed steroids to reduce the inflammation and albuterol inhaler. I know this isn’t natural but it’s helping her. It’s a brutal illness.  Sorry you’re going through this.

Omg this is so scary to read my 3 year old is sleeping now but in the night she has a horrible cough and she cried all night almost. Barely breathes through her nose. I had to gently force her to take a warm steamy bath and I did the Neil Med Nasal Flush. And she felt better but I wasn’t sure if I should see the doctor as I usually do things at home, unless necessary. Wondering if there’s any antibiotic they would prescribe

You can test her at home for flu a, b or Covid. Unfortunately if it’s a flu strain then antibiotics won’t work. They sell the tests over the counter, just the nasal swab kind. Then you know what you’re dealing with…my daughter has flu b. It’s causing a really bad cough in kids especially. And it’s going around big time. Steamy bath is good but, yet it’s not the usual helpful thing for my daughter with this particular flu. Not much is. No dairy, low sugar and lots of water! A teaspoon of organic local honey before bed has helped a little bit. I also find going to the doctor at least gives you a recorded timeline even if they don’t really help much. Good luck! Be well!!!!

Thank you for the recipe, I will try it 100%. My daughter often has cough, and I always try to give her some natural remedies. What helps her the best is mullein tea or mullein leaf drops like this supplement https://www.amazon.com/USDA-Organic-Mullein-Drops-Lungs/dp/B0CKBPTPRL. I think this tea will be also very helpful, never heard about it before, so thank you for sharing.
