Precarious Status of Independent Study in California

shared by Heddi Craft
You may have heard that the big bill to change charter school law has been tabled but there are still some problematic things happening for independent study in general with the budget!
Please contact Your Legislator Today! Budget Conversations are happening now.
Please reach out to tell state lawmakers to urge them to preserve Independent Study as a crucial option for students.
SUGGESTED TALKING POINTS FOR PHONE CALL OR EMAIL:
Hello, my name is ______________. I am a teacher/educator/parent from [INSERT SCHOOL NAME].
The Governor and Legislature are debating last minute changes to the Independent Study law as part of the budget negotiations. The current proposal is highly problematic.
It is important that the Legislature and Governor not unintentionally shutter programs for alternative education or at-promise students. Additionally, if the state is going to change the law, it needs to give enough time for families and schools to adapt and revise Independent Study programs without disrupting education plans and funding.
A broad coalition of education groups sent a letter with potential amendments to address our concerns. Remarkably, the groups representing school labor, management, and charter schools are united in asking for these changes. (Letter will be posted soon at ccis.org). Please consider these changes as you debate the final budget. Our Independent Study program is a crucial option for students.
