Big Creek Lumber Offers McCrary Family Scholarship for 4th Consecutive Year

Big Creek Lumber is  offering a scholarship in the form of a one-time award amount of $2,000 to help today’s youth gain valuable skills that will help them be self-sufficient and provide the opportunity to build sustainable, enjoyable careers.

We are offering a scholarship in the form of a one-time award amount of $2,000, with the opportunity to apply for a one-time renewal. We are now accepting applications for 2024. The deadline to apply is April 26, 2024.

Recognizing a growing need for young people to enter the skilled trades, the McCrary family wanted to encourage and provide financial support to offset the expense of attending a school studying skilled trades in the manufacturing, construction, maintenance fields or forestry.

Applicants must meet the following criteria: 

  1. High school senior who plans to attend a university or college majoring in forestry or attend a trade, vocational or truck driving school beginning in the Fall after they receive the scholarship.
  2. Attend a High School within 25 miles of a Big Creek Lumber Location in California (Atwater, Davenport, Half Moon Bay, Paso Robles, Santa Cruz, Vallejo or Watsonville)

  • Vincent Locatelli, Santa Cruz High School in Santa Cruz, CA

2022 Recipients:

  • Griffin Spooner, Santa Cruz High School in Santa Cruz, CA
  • Kyle Nee, Santa Cruz High School in Santa Cruz, CA

2021 Recipients:

  • Alex Neri-Castro, SLV High School in Felton, CA
  • Caeden Murphy, Independent High School in Paso Robles, CA

 

The McCrary Family Scholarship honors the careers of late Big Creek Lumber co-founders Bud and Lud McCrary who made their impact through their work in the skilled trades and by advancing the practice of environmentally responsible forestry.

The scholarship also honors the skilled tradespeople and forestry professionals who are customers or employees of Big Creek Lumber and have contributed to the company’s continued success over the years and the important role these careers play in the world.
