In today’s culture, moms have many choices, not all of them easy, some of them a compromise, some out of necessity, some because of a special talent or passionate interest. I connected with Kim McGuire of the newly formed Motherhood Movement and asked her a few questions. She responded enthusiastically about the new venture she and her partners have started.

Three moms, Amy Davis, Destiny Malone and Kim McGuire, who have a passion for fitness, being outdoors, being with their children, plus making and being with friends, after much research and planning, opened their new business yesterday.
“We came together when we realized that an outdoor fitness program specifically for moms was no longer available in our community. For quite a long time, all three of us had wanted that piece of our lives back in some sort of way. The fitness class that we used to attend was not only a good workout, it helped build important relationships for us and showed us that being a busy mom is not as disabling or lonely as it can appear.
“We feel that moms need to have outlets to connect with one another, and sometimes that can be hard to accomplish.”
We call ourselves a “mom group” but we have no specific parameters as to who can join because ultimately anyone is welcome and we want everyone to know that. There are many unique situations in this life such as foster moms, women whom have experienced the loss of a child, temporary guardians, those that wish to be a mother, but are unable to obtain that status, fur baby moms, transgender moms, and more. No matter what your walk of life, we want women to know that they are welcome in our group.
“Motherhood” can mean different things to different people. Nobody should feel afraid to find their village. And nobody should be raising their kids feeling alone. So we decided to start up a program that would encompass fitness that involves moms and play for children in hopes that it would create a safe space for forming community and strength. Our typical clientele may be pregnant, postpartum moms or moms currently raising young children.
“Ultimately, our focus is on self-care, community, inclusion, and fun for all moms.”
Right now, classes are held on Tuesdays every week at 10am at Scotts Valley Sky Park. Once June hits, classes will be offered two days a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We have some fun collaborations with other local businesses coming up, and we plan to incorporate events and meetups eventually as well. All of these activities will be included in purchased memberships. We also offer drop in classes and packages. Our goal is to make this program affordable, attainable and desirable.
“Our first class this past Tuesday was a total blast. We had 17 moms attend with over 20 children. While it was chaotic, it was also really beautiful to see that people were curious. This first class was free and the ladies provided a lot of positive feedback on how effective the workout was in pushing them and how inclusive it was with the children. We had bubbles, age-appropriate fidget toys, and a portable pool filled with blocks, balls, and corn for sensory play. There were children from ages 0-5 years old. After the mommy work out, a small play group was provided in which there was a song, a story and a craft for the kids to take home. Since it was a pre-Mother’s Day celebration, we handed out an individual rose to each of the moms. We saw a lot of connections develop, and lots of smiling children.”
Amy Davis is the Instructor of Fitness classes that are held in Scotts Valley on the Skypark soccer fields. Amy is a Physical Therapist with Santa Cruz Mobile PT. She is a certified pelvic floor physical therapist and she brings that flare to our classes to aid those both in pregnancy and postpartum. Amy is also a mother of three and a total powerhouse!
Destiny Malone is one of our Play Coordinators for the Motherhood Movement. She has developed a play group following our fitness class and provides entertainment for the children during the workout. Destiny is a childcare professional with credentials, and runs a local preschool. Destiny is also a mother of three and has the kindest heart you’ll ever meet.
Kim McGuire is also one of our Play Coordinators for the Movement! She will also be formulating play groups, coordinating events, and managing our social media. She has an administrative/customer service background that helps to make those tasks possible. Kim is also a mother of two and can bring the humor that you didn’t know you needed in your life.
