28 Best Halloween Movies for Kids, by Age and Scare Level

Cool breezes and spider webs- it’s Halloween time! This list of Halloween movies broken down by age is a great way to make it a fun and spooky October! Finding good Halloween movies for kids is one of my favorite parts of the season — low-pressure, full of that first-fall-breeze excitement, and a nice break from decision fatigue. The tricky part is finding Halloween movies for kids that are actually right for your kid — what’s delightfully spooky for one child is a night of bad dreams for another.

So I put together this list of Halloween movies for kids organized by age, with a scare level and runtime for every single pick, plus my own notes on what to expect. I still recommend cross-checking anything borderline on Common Sense Media for a detailed breakdown, since every kid’s sensitivity is different — but this should get you most of the way to a good pick fast.

Halloween Movies for Kids Ages 3-5 (Very Gentle)

These Halloween movies for kids are all genuinely gentle — sweet, silly, and built for the littlest trick-or-treaters. No real scares here.

A string of classic Disney cartoon shorts, loosely tied together by the plot of Disney villains taking over the House of Mouse. It’s more variety show than single story, which makes it easy to watch in pieces if your kid’s attention span runs short.

Halloween Movies for Kids Ages 6-8 (Mildly Spooky)

This next batch of Halloween movies for kids is a step up in spook factor, but still nothing that should cause nightmares for most kids this age. A few have a jump-scare moment or two — I’ve flagged those below.

Toy Story of Terror

Best for: Ages 6+  |  Scare level: Mildly spooky  |  Runtime: 21 minutes  |  Year: 2013

What starts as a road trip for the Toy Story gang takes a turn after a detour to a roadside motel. When Mr. Potato Head suddenly disappears, his friends find themselves in a hilarious mystery they need to solve before they suffer the same fate. Genuinely funny, with just enough tension to feel like a real mystery.

The Nightmare Before Christmas

Best for: Ages 6+  |  Scare level: Mildly spooky  |  Runtime: 76 minutes  |  Year: 1993

Bored with the old scare-and-scream routine, Pumpkin King Jack Skellington longs to spread the joy of Christmas instead. His merry mission puts Santa in jeopardy and creates a nightmare for good little boys and girls everywhere. Visually a little dark and gothic, but tonally warm — a genuine crossover classic for both holidays.

Casper

Best for: Ages 6+  |  Scare level: Mildly spooky  |  Runtime: 100 minutes  |  Year: 1995

A “ghost therapist” and his daughter move into a house haunted by three rambunctious ghosts and Casper, the friendly one, setting the stage for some wild antics and a surprisingly sweet story underneath.

Scooby-Doo and the Goblin King

Best for: Ages 6+  |  Scare level: Mildly spooky  |  Runtime: 74 minutes  |  Year: 2008

Monsters, Inc.

Best for: Ages 6+  |  Scare level: Mildly spooky  |  Runtime: 92 minutes  |  Year: 2001

There’s a reason there are monsters in kids’ closets — it’s their job. Monsters, Inc. is the most successful scream-processing factory in the monster world, and there’s no better Scarer than James P. Sullivan. But when “Sulley” accidentally lets a little human girl into Monstropolis, life turns upside down. Funny, warm, and one of the gentlest “monster” movies on this list.

🔗 Watch Monsters, Inc.

Hotel Transylvania

Best for: Ages 6+  |  Scare level: Mildly spooky  |  Runtime: 91 minutes  |  Year: 2012

Welcome to Hotel Transylvania, Dracula’s lavish five-stake resort, where monsters and their families can live it up with no humans allowed — until one wanders in. Funny, colorful, and one of the more reliable “monsters are friendly” movies for this age group.

🔗 Watch Hotel Transylvania

The Addams Family

Best for: Ages 6+  |  Scare level: Mildly spooky  |  Runtime: 87 minutes  |  Year: 2019

Gomez and Morticia Addams just want a quiet life for their macabre, close-knit family, until a home renovation show host sets her sights on exposing their mansion before Wednesday and Pugsley’s big family ceremony. Genuinely funny, gently spooky, and about as kid-friendly as “creepy and kooky” gets.

🔗 Watch The Addams Family

Alvin and the Chipmunks Meet the Wolfman

Best for: Ages 6+  |  Scare level: Mildly spooky  |  Runtime: 77 minutes  |  Year: 2000

The world’s most famous chipmunks race against the next full moon in a madcap comedy full of classic monster-movie spoofing. Low-stakes, silly, and a good pick for a kid who wants “spooky” more than actually spooky.

🔗 Watch Alvin and the Chipmunks Meet the Wolfman

Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit

Best for: Ages 7+  |  Scare level: Mildly spooky  |  Runtime: 94 minutes  |  Year: 2005

The clearest gap in the old version of this list. Wallace and Gromit take on a giant vegetable-eating were-rabbit terrorizing the village ahead of the annual Giant Vegetable Competition. Charming, genuinely funny for adults too, with a few mildly tense were-rabbit transformation scenes.

Muppets Haunted Mansion

Best for: Ages 7+  |  Scare level: Mildly spooky (a couple of intense moments)  |  Runtime: 49 minutes  |  Year: 2021

A direct Halloween story inspired by the Disney theme park ride, following Gonzo and Pepe as they spend a night in a haunted mansion to win a bet. Funny for parents, spooky-fun for kids, though a handful of scenes run a little more intense than the rest of this bucket — worth previewing if your kid startles easily.

Halloween Movies for Kids Ages 9+ (Spookier Picks)

These Halloween movies for kids lean into real Halloween atmosphere — witches, ghosts, monsters, a body count of jump scares. Two of them (marked below) run more mature than the rest of this bucket, so I’d preview those specifically if you have a sensitive kid.

Hocus Pocus

Best for: Ages 8+  |  Scare level: Spooky  |  Runtime: 96 minutes  |  Year: 1993

Three outlandish witches return from 17th-century Salem after they’re accidentally conjured up by some unsuspecting pranksters. A night full of zany chaos follows as the 300-year-old trio try to reclaim their youth — but first they have to outwit three kids and a talking cat. A Halloween staple for a reason.

Halloweentown

Best for: Ages 8+  |  Scare level: Spooky  |  Runtime: 84 minutes  |  Year: 1998

On her 13th birthday, Marnie learns she’s a witch, discovers a secret portal, and is transported to Halloweentown — a place where ghosts, ghouls, witches, and werewolves live apart from the human world. She soon finds herself battling wicked warlocks and evil curses. A beloved Disney Channel original with real atmosphere.

Goosebumps

Best for: Ages 8+  |  Scare level: Spooky  |  Runtime: 103 minutes  |  Year: 2015

After moving to a small town, Zach meets his next-door neighbor Hannah, daughter of bestselling Goosebumps author R.L. Stine. Stine turns out to be a prisoner of his own imagination — the monsters from his books are real, and he keeps his readers safe by keeping them locked in their pages. When Zach accidentally unleashes them, it’s up to Stine, Zach, and Hannah to get them back where they belong.

🔗 Watch Goosebumps

Monster House

Best for: Ages 8+  |  Scare level: Spooky  |  Runtime: 91 minutes  |  Year: 2006

No adult believes three kids’ claim that the house next door is a living creature that means them harm. With Halloween approaching, they have to find a way to destroy it before innocent trick-or-treaters meet a ghastly end. Genuinely tense in a few spots — a good pick once your kid is past the “easily startled” stage.

🔗 Watch Monster House

The Witches

Best for: Ages 8+  |  Scare level: Spooky  |  Runtime: 91 minutes  |  Year: 1990

A young boy stumbles onto a witch convention and has to stop them — even after being turned into a mouse. Based on the book by Roald Dahl, and genuinely creepy in the best way; the witches’ true faces are the stuff of legitimate childhood memories, so I’d preview it if your kid is sensitive to body-horror-adjacent imagery.

🔗 Watch The Witches

Beetlejuice

Best for: Ages 11+ (runs more mature than the rest of this list — Common Sense Media flags language and some suggestive humor)  |  Scare level: Spooky  |  Runtime: 92 minutes  |  Year: 1988

A couple of nice, newly-dead homebody ghosts try to haunt the pretentious humans who’ve moved into their house, and end up asking for help from a demonic wraith they can’t control. A comic fantasy classic, but genuinely the most mature pick on this list — save it for tweens.

🔗 Watch Beetlejuice

Coraline

Best for: Ages 9+  |  Scare level: Spooky  |  Runtime: 100 minutes  |  Year: 2009

While exploring her new home, Coraline discovers a secret door leading to an alternate world that mirrors her own — but seems better, until the Other Mother tries to keep her there forever. Beautifully made stop-motion with real tension. One of the better “properly spooky but not gory” picks for this age.

🔗 Watch Coraline

Ghostbusters

Best for: Ages 10+ (Common Sense Media flags some adult innuendo — best for tweens and up)  |  Scare level: Spooky  |  Runtime: 105 minutes  |  Year: 1984

Ghosts invade New York and force a trio of spirit exterminators to save the city, in one of the biggest comedies of all time. An icon for a reason — just one to save for the older end of this bracket.

🔗 Watch Ghostbusters

Frankenweenie

Best for: Ages 9+  |  Scare level: Spooky  |  Runtime: 87 minutes  |  Year: 2012

A boy named Victor loses his beloved dog Sparky, then brings him back to life with a Frankenstein-style experiment. Tim Burton’s black-and-white stop-motion tribute is genuinely touching, but the tone is dark and the pet-loss theme can land hard for sensitive kids — know your kid before picking this one.

🔗 Watch Frankenweenie

ParaNorman

Best for: Ages 9+ (closer to 10-11 for more sensitive kids)  |  Scare level: Spooky  |  Runtime: 93 minutes  |  Year: 2012

Norman can see and talk to the dead, which makes him an outcast — until his town needs him to stop a centuries-old curse and a horde of zombies. Genuinely well-reviewed stop-motion with real heart under the scares, but the zombie sequences are more intense than most of this list’s other picks.

🔗 Watch ParaNorman

KPop Demon Hunters

Best for: Ages 9+  |  Scare level: Spooky  |  Runtime: 95 minutes  |  Year: 2025

The obvious current addition. Huntr/x is a hit K-pop girl group by day and a team of demon hunters by night, battling supernatural forces with martial arts and music. Not a traditional Halloween movie, but it’s got monsters, demons, and huge kid appeal — Netflix itself features it in their Halloween picks. Action-heavy with some genuinely tense demon encounters, so it fits best at the older end of this bracket.
