Santa Cruz SPCA Preteen PAWS Program Tier 1

Promoting Animal Welfare with Students

The PAWS program is aimed at animal lovers. Preteen PAWS Tier One is for students 10-12 years. It introduces children to how a shelter operates and teaches how to recognize animal behavior and body language. It helps the children conduct “consent tests” with the animals and emphasizes the importance of letting the animal come to you voluntarily. The children help socialize the animals and allow them to increase their confidence with a variety of people. Basic animal training techniques are developed, and advertising posters are created to promote the shelter animals to potential adopters.
