Myth or fact? Recycling still works. Fact! Come learn about the story of waste and how to Recycle Right! and reduce waste.

Where does the collected recycling, food scraps, yard waste, and trash go in the City of Santa Cruz? Come see for yourself! The City’s Waste Reduction Department is offering an opportunity for visitors to come learn about the underbelly of waste, while also workshopping how to Recycle Right! in the City of Santa Cruz and avoid unnecessary waste. Join us!

Class is limited to 25 people.
Children must be at least 8 years old. Youth ages 8 -17 must be accompanied by an adult.
All participants must wear closed-toe shoes and long pants. Come prepared for the weather.
Carpooling/biking is encouraged as parking is limited.

Attendees can expect to learn about the history of recycling, how to move beyond the blue bin, and what happens to all waste streams collected in the City of Santa Cruz! Visitors will see what happens to the 30 to 50 tons of material that Santa Cruzians place into their blue recycle bins every single day of the week. We will also visit a mountain of scrap metal, learn about the facility’s Household Hazardous Waste Program, and see the Food Scrap Pre-Processor Machine. A lengthy Q&A session will be offered; come prepared with all your waste reduction questions. We hope that visitors will leave with a new perspectives and hopefulness for the future of waste reduction. For a taste of what you might see, check out the video below!

Pre-registration is required. No drop-ins. All participants must sign a waiver to go on the tour. A follow-up email with more information will be sent once you have registered.
