March is Hummingbird Month at the UCSC Arboretum!

March, Daily 9am – 5pm

Come celebrate these tiny aerial acrobats and the beautiful gardens that sustain them during March Hummingbird Month.

This time of year the Arboretum hosts both Anna’s and Allen’s hummingbirds. We have a variety of activities scattered throughout the month, including; docents in the gardens, photography experts, tours, and a talk from Dr. Bruce Lyon. See our webpage for a schedule of activities and more information about hummingbirds and the abundance of plants at the Arboretum that attract them. Rain cancels outdoor activities.

We will also feature hummingbird merchandise and hummingbird attracting plants at our gift shop and nursery. Visit Norrie’s Gift & Garden Shop, Tuesdays thru Sundays from 10 – 4.

All events are free with paid admission: Adults: $10.00, Seniors $8.00, Children 4-17: $5.00

Saturday, March 2  Arboretum Docent and Photographer Ferd Bergholz will be stationed in the Australian Garden: 10 – 12; First Saturday Tour about Plants and Hummingbirds: 11am

Tuesday, March 5  Community Tuesday: Admission is Free the first Tuesday of every month

Saturday, March 9  Meet Professional Photographer Kevin Lohman in the Garden: Tips and Tricks for photographing birds: 8 – 10, _{(see some of Kevin’s great photography);}  Arboretum Docent and Photographer Ferd Bergholz will be stationed in the Australian Garden: 10 – 12, _{(see some of Ferd’s great hummingbird photos)}

Tuesday, March 12  Docent-lead Bird Walk. Begins at 9:15

Saturday, March 16  Early Bird Saturday: Members enjoy early access to the gardens: 7 – 9;  Arboretum Docent and Photographer Ferd Bergholz will be stationed in the Australian Garden: 10 – 12

Saturday, March 23  Arboretum Docent and Photographer Ferd Bergholz will be stationed in the Australian Garden: 10 – 12

Sunday, March 24  Meet Bruce Lyon, professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at UCSC for a lecture entitled: Jewels in the garden: a Darwinian natural history of hummingbirds, 1 – 2:30pm in Hort 2 Meeting Hall

 Saturday, March 30  Arboretum Docent and Photographer Ferd Bergholz will be stationed in the Australian Garden: 10 – 12
