Annual Celebration, Saturday, June 18, 12 – 5pm, Laurel Park, 301 Center St, Santa Cruz
Juneteenth is a special day for anyone who believes in freedom and equality for all people. Join us for music, poetry, dance, delicious soul food, arts & crafts, basketball skills contest, and the annual sack race! All events are in conjunction with the annual @santacruzjuneteenth Celebration at the London Nelson Center.
On June 19th, 1865, Union soldiers led by Major General Gordon Granger landed in Galveston, Texas with the news that the Civil War had ended and Blacks were now free. 155 years later, we celebrate this remarkable event at Juneteenth celebrations across the country. A long-held tradition among African Americans, Juneteenth celebrates culture and is a special day for anyone who believes in freedom and equality for all people.
Join us for this insightful, collective share of Santa Cruz black history featuring Juneteenth, London Nelson, Louis Venable, the Black and Tan Baseball League, and much more. Put your knowledge to the test by participating in a black history trivia game with prizes! Includes Refreshments. Brought to you by the MAH, in partnership with the City of Santa Cruz, the London Nelson Legacy Initiative, Black Health Matters, and Textured Waves.
Come create space to appreciate and embrace nature as well as our selves through mindfulness and expression! This will be an easy to moderate 2 mile hike round trip with our Ceremony taking place on the beach. Please bring comfortable shoes, layered clothing, water, a pen or pencil, and something to sit on.
Liberation Paddle Out, Saturday, June 19, 12 – 4pm, Cowell Beach, 21 Municipal Wharf, Santa Cruz
The Liberation Paddle Out is a full day of fun and will include an indigenous land blessing, beach games, spoken word, live DJ on the beach (@fathertaj), a beach clean-up, paddle-out/paddle-out lessons, free equipment for BSSC members, and so much more.
