In Education, Family Support, Teachers Share

Abby Fremouw is a third grade teacher in Couer D’Alene Idaho who uses Kindness 101 videos first thing in the morning to help her children identify admirable character traits. Later as they share literature, they link character traits to the fictional protagonists.  Abby shares how her ideas can be used by teachers in school. She goes through how it all works and includes a list of character traits developed by her students under her guidance. Of course parents can use her ideas at home!

Hi all! Happy Summer!

Educators, I hope you are enjoying a much needed break. I have updated my slideshow for next year. Here is the folder to access the months. I know many go further into June than we do so as new videos come out, I will add further dates. https://drive.google.com/…/1oiMi9mIHSbAzY9q3Qz7uayiCqMX…

Erinn Williams has one with journal entries that is amazing, if you are looking for more guidance, just search her name.

Mine is very simple. I use it in 3rd grade but it can be used in any grade. I have not made it available to “edit” as I use it with my personal classroom, but you can make copies and change the Bitmojis or edit, as needed.

I have added some of the new videos to cover spring break, as our breaks are all different. I also know that every once in awhile, I will duplicate a video, human error. I will try to fix it on my end as soon as I notice it.

In my classroom, I open the day with a video. My students then reflect on the video by choosing a character trait they witnessed in the video.

I have created my own journal, which you are welcome to use (make a copy to edit). I make copies of the journal entry and bind it into a notebook for each student.

I share the lists of positive character traits for students to choose from as they reflect. By the end of the year, my students’ vocabulary to describe characters was incredible so double bonus! positive-character-traits

After they finish their journal, they bring it to the carpet and we use it to start our day, reflecting on what they saw, how they will apply it to their own lives and/or any connections they have. I let the students “drive” the conversation. This leads to some amazing conversations.

We finish our discussion with reading a page or two out of our “on-going” book. Throughout the year, I used “The Boy, The Mole, the Fox and the Horse”, “Big Panda, Tiny Dragon” and “The Journey; Big Panda and Tiny Dragon”.

We connect these books to our daily conversations and often the videos will connect to the page that we are on and the kids are blown away! This part of our day is a favorite for my students and me. I hear it from every student and previous students always talk about this when they return to visit me. I am blessed to have administration that allows me to put this part of my day as a priority for my classroom and it is something I am extremely passionate about!

Please let me know if you have any questions!
