On Screen is a five-documentary film series focusing on the themes behind our acronym BLACK: Building Legacies of Access in Communities of Kinship. \nStarting this month through June\, screenings will be the 3rd Tuesday at the Resource Center for Nonviolence and the 3rd Wednesday of the month at the Capitola Branch Library. Doors open at 6:15\, screenings begin at 6:30. \nWhose Streets? is February’s film. Watch the trailer here . Each screening will be followed by a discussion and/or Q&A. Some of the filmmakers will be participating. Stay tuned! \nABOUT THE FILM When unarmed black teenager Michael Brown was killed by a white police officer in Ferguson\, Missouri\, and left lying in the street for hours\, it marked a breaking point for the residents of the St. Louis area and beyond. Uniting people from the community and across the nation\, a movement-propelled by young activists and Ferguson community members-was born. Told by the local residents and activists on the front lines fighting for justice\, equality and an end to police brutality\, Whose Streets? is an unflinching look at the Ferguson uprising and the movement that followed. \nThe series continues with: March 20\, Tell Them We Are Rising. The Story of Black Colleges and Universities explores the pivotal role historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have played over the course of 150 years. \nApril 17\, Against All Odds: The Fight for The Black Middle Class. Acclaimed journalist Bob Herbert asks\, “Have Black Americans had a fair shot at the American dream?” He probes the harsh and often brutal discrimination that has made it extremely difficult for African-Americans to establish a middle-class standard of living\, while also exploring the often heroic efforts of Black families to pursue the American Dream in the face of unrelenting barriers. \nMay 22\, The Taking of Harris Neck: 80 years of Injustice for the Gullah People. The stunning marshlands of Harris Neck\, Georgia have a tragic history. In 1942\, the US government took 2687 acres of land inhabited by descendants of freed slaves to build an airbase. The government promised to give the land back after the war. Now 80 years later the community is still fighting to get their land back. The Taking of Harris Neck tells a story of trauma and racism – and the perseverance to overcome against all odds. \nJune 19\, Decendent follows decendents of the survivors from the Clotilda\, the last ship that carried enslaved Africans to the United States\, as they reclaim their story.

DESCRIPTION:Junior Rangers at Garfield Park Library\nFebruary 15\, 3:30 – 5pm\n \nJunior Rangers is a statewide program for 7 – 12 year olds. Junior Rangers will receive a logbook\, and earn stamps and rewards along the way as they participate in programs. \nAt your first Junior Ranger program you will get a logbook and badge. Play games\, observe wildlife\, and more\, all while making friends your own age in some of the best places in California.  For each activity you will earn a stamp in your logbook. And that’s not all\, as you go through the program\, one activity at a time\, you will earn some very cool rewards! \n\nThere are different Junior Ranger activity areas.  Geology\, ecology\, history\, safety\, plants\, and wildlife may be some of the activity areas you will be exploring. \nYou can participate at one event\, or all offered. You should plan to spend about an hour and a half at each activity\, and you will have so much fun! \nFebruary 15\nOhlone Science: Pigments & Paint\nIn this fun science and art activity\, we’ll explore the pigments and binding agents traditionally used by local indigenous people. This documentary follows Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the last few years of his life\, from the vital role he played in the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to his assassination in 1968. Light refreshments will be provided and registration is recommended\, but not required. Register below. \nKing in the Wilderness\n2018; 115 min; Rated TV-14 \nKing in the Wilderness chronicles the final chapters of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life\, revealing a conflicted leader who faced an onslaught of criticism from both sides of the political spectrum. While the Black Power movement saw his nonviolence as weakness\, and President Lyndon B. Johnson saw his anti-Vietnam War speeches as irresponsible\, Dr. King’s unyielding belief in peaceful protest became a testing point for a nation on the brink of chaos. \nThe documentary debuted at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival and is directed by Peter Kunhardt. Drawing on conversations with those who knew Dr. King well\, including many fellow members of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC)\, King in the Wilderness reveals stirring new perspectives on Dr. King’s character\, his radical doctrine of nonviolence and his internal philosophical struggles prior to his assassination in 1968.
