We’re celebrating World Labyrinth Day\, where people around the globe will be participating in a walking meditation for World Peace that rolls through the time zones- “Walk as One at 1”. Sunny or cloudy\, the day will be beautiful and the flower power of the thousands of lavender plants will be strong! \nOur Day includes a walk with farm owners Starr Linden & Andy Griffin through the flower gardens that embrace the Lavender Labyrinth where we will stop to smell the roses. They’ve planted 200 Rose Bushes over the last three years\, and some of them will be in full bloom. Learn about the different kinds of roses that exist\, from the ancient China roses to the highly scented European heirlooms like the Gallicas\, Bourbon\, and Damascus roses. We have modern Hybrid Tea roses planted out\, and hardy Rugosa roses\, Wild roses\, climbers\, miniatures\, and even the sprawling heirlooms that are climbing tall pines. Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy! \nTicket Cost: $35/ for every 2 in same car $30 each. Cost includes Labyrinth Walk & Discussion & Rose Garden and Farm Tour.  \nPlease bring a picnic lunch to eat as part of the event. \nSaturday\, May 4th! Gates open at 10:00 for parking and registration.  It is essential that you arrive on time so that we can park cars and begin together. If you have to leave early let us know at the gate\, otherwise the event goes from 10:30 -3:30 PM. \nNOTE: This event is for ages 12 and older and not suitable for younger children and pets. Pets cannot be kept in the car.  The farms address in Watsonville will be sent with the ticket purchase confirmation.

But it happened\, they say\, to poor Mayzie McGrew.” \nGertrude McFuzz is our third tale\, and it begins\, “There was once a girl-bird named Gertrude McFuzz\, and she had the smallest plain tail there ever was. One droopy-droop feather. That’s all she had” \nThe Sneetches story is the last we will see. “Now the Star-Belly Sneetches had bellies with stars. The Plain-Bellied Sneetches had none upon thars.”

Join our Wildland Fire Academy! \nThe Santa Cruz COE is pleased to provide two upcoming sessions of a new Wildland Fire Academy\, in partnership with CAL FIRE and the California Conservation Corps. \nParticipants can complete trainings and receive certification for an entry-level firefighter position\, building skills including use of personal protective equipment\, deploying a fire shelter\, building a secure fire line\, mop up and patrol of fire areas\, and improving property safety. Must be 18 or older to participate \nFIND OUT MORE \n\n\n\n\nThe Santa Cruz County Office of Education is proud to offer the opportunity to participate in our Wildland Fire Academy. Working in partnership with CAL FIRE and California Conservation Corps\, students can complete trainings needed for an entry-level firefighter position. \nStudents will learn to recognize hazards and unsafe situations.  \nTrainings offered include:  \n\nDon (put on)\, doff (take off)\, and maintain wildland personal protective equipment \nDeploy a fire shelter\, maintain suppression hand tools and equipment \nAssemble and prepare for response; construct and secure a fire line \nReduce the threat of fire exposure to improved properties\nMop up and patrol of a fire area when working with wildland fires\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis course is designed to provide graduates employment opportunities with CAL FIRE or other agencies that accept this level of training. \nLocations: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCalifornia Conservation Corps \n Days: Monday-Friday\,  7am – 5pm  \n30 Aviation Way\, Watsonville CA 95076 \nSequoia Schools\nDays: Monday-Friday\, 5:30 pm – 8:30pm\, 229 Freedom Blvd.\, Freedom\, CA 95019

DESCRIPTION:Family Concert and The Carnival of the Animals\nSunday\, February 25\, 2pm \nTake the kids away from their screens and bring them to a live concert! \nJoin Maestro Daniel Stewart\, beloved Master of Ceremonies Omari Tau\, Santa Cruz Symphony\, Santa Cruz County Youth Symphony\, Cabrillo Youth Chorus\, Santa Cruz Ballet Theater\, El Sistema\, Kuumbwa Jazz Honor Band\, and Esperanza del Valle Folklórico for our annual Family Concert! \nThe Santa Cruz Symphony presents Camille Saint-Saëns’ famed The Carnival of the Animals alongside community partners. TICKETS  Adults: $24 | Kids: $13.50 (ages 3-17) \n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur Family Concert is the finale of weeks of incredible educational experiences. Santa Cruz Symphony is a partner orchestra with Carnegie Hall for its Link Up program\, in which students grades 3–5 at dozens of schools learn to sing and play an instrument in their classrooms. This year\, kids discover all the interwoven ways in which music moves physically and emotionally in a program called The Orchestra Moves. You can learn more about all of our educational programs here.  \nDuring the week before the Sunday Family Concert\, many students bring their instruments and voices to perform with Santa Cruz Symphony from their seats at a series of rousing weekday Youth Concerts. For many students\, this is their first time experiencing live orchestral music!  \nFinally\, at the Family Concert on Sunday\, February 25\, the whole community has the chance to see and hear this year’s Link Up program performed by Santa Cruz Symphony and our community partners\, followed by the timeless classic The Carnival of the Animals. \nThe Family Concert is a vibrant musical event with entertainment for all ages. This special event will honor and commemorate the legacy of our beloved teacher\, activist\, and community leader\, Mas Hashimoto. \nSaturday\, February 24\, 2:00-4:00pm at the Watsonville Civic Plaza\, 4th Floor Community Room\nAll ages are welcome to attend. \nThe program will include a screening of Mas Hashimoto’s TEDx TALK introducing his presentation of “Racism and America’s Concentration Camps”\, with opening remarks by Susan Tatsui D’Arcy who encouraged Mas to do the talk and arranged for filming of the impactful 19-minute video. \nFeatured guests and performers include: \n\nCarol Heitzig\, former WPL Director current Friends President\, as the Mistress of Ceremonies\na performance by Watsonville Taiko Drummers\na Haiku in memory of Mas by Bob Gomez\, Watsonville Poet Laureate\nspeaker presentations and remembrances of Mas Hashimoto by Marcia Hashimoto\, Sandy Lydon\, Geri Solano-Simmons and Erica Padilla Chavez.
