Journey beyond the reach of sunlight to explore one of Earth’s least understood environments\, where bizarre creatures have evolved remarkable adaptations to survive crushing pressure\, perpetual darkness\, and scarce resources. \nKaila will introduce the different zones of the deep ocean and the fascinating animals that call them home\, revealing how life thrives in conditions that seem impossible. She’ll also share stories\, photographs\, and discoveries from her graduate research at Scripps Institution of Oceanography\, where she studied deep-sea worms and helped describe and name three species new to science\, including the aptly named “Vampire Worms.” \nWhether you’re fascinated by marine biology\, ocean exploration\, or strange and wonderful deep-sea creatures\, this talk offers a glimpse into a hidden world few people ever get to see. \nREGISTER HERE \nGeneral: $12\nStudents: $8\nMembers: $5 Off \n\nThis program will take place indoors at the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History. DESCRIPTION:The Museum’s 120th Birthday Party!\nFriday\, August 1\,  5 – 8pm; Free entry to museum all day 11am – 8pm\n\nTo celebrate\, we’re throwing a huge whale of a birthday party for August’s First Friday! \nWe’re bringing together some of our friends from across the community for a night of games\, arts and crafts\, music\, and so much more. Learn about the impacts made by these partners throughout the County and our shared collaborative histories over the years. \nAs a special treat\, there will be a storytime with internationally acclaimed children’s book author\, Taylor Lahey. To spotlight the Museum’s commitment to environmental education for all ages\, Taylor will be reading his book about youth-driven environmental activism which shows anyone\, no matter the age\, can make a positive impact in the world! \nPLUS\, this wouldn’t be a party without a FREE dessert station from Freedom Bakery! We’ll have a sweets bar for the kiddos and an open bar for the adults. You may have seen them in your backyard\, but how much do you really know about the secretive world of the world’s smallest bird? \nThere is a lot to unpack in these minuscule aviators and here is an opportunity to learn about their incredible flight abilities\, diet\, size\, and social behaviors. \nDive into the hidden lives of hummingbirds with a conservation biologist who conducts fieldwork with this amazing avifauna. \nREGISTER \nInstructor: Stephen Winsor\, Conservation biologist \nMaterials: Light refreshments will be served prior to the start of the program. After the lecture\, there will be an audience engagement game. \nClass Fee: $12 – Museum Members receive a special discounted price applied at checkout.
