Email events@santacruzmuseum.org to be added to a waitlist. \n\n\n\nTravel back in time with local paleontologist Wayne Thompson from Pacific Paleontology during this hands-on experience in the Santa Cruz Sandhills. Learn first hand about the ancient life of what used to be the Monterey Bay and is now the Santa Cruz Mountains. We’ll hunt for the fossilized remains of ancient creatures like megalodon and explore the Santa Margarita Formation — an ocean sediment rock layer that was formed 10-12 million years ago! \nLocation: Private property in Scotts Valley\n$15 Members | $25 General \nWhat to Expect \n\nExact meet-up location will be shared upon registration.\nWe will not walk far from the parking area and will mostly be working and learning in one main spot. Terrain is sandy and mostly flat.\nFeel free to bring a chair\, stool\, or knee pad. Otherwise be prepared for prolonged standing or sitting on the sandy soil.\nThere are no restrooms or facilities at this location.\nWear layers\, comfortable shoes\, and bring any snacks you might need. Using shells\, pine nuts\, and other natural materials\, we will craft necklaces under Eleanor’s guidance while learning about the traditional skills and cultural teachings of the Amah Mutsun. \n$35 Members | $45 General  Register \nEmail events@santacruzmuseum.org with any questions\, accommodation requests\, or if you have trouble registering. \n\n\n\nAbout the Artist\nEleanor Castro is an Elder of the Amah Mutsun tribal band from San Juan Bautista\, descendent of the Ohlone Coastanoan people.  Her great- great-grandmother spoke Mutsun and also Awaswas\, which was the tribe taken to build Mission Santa Cruz. \nShe learned her cultural and artisanal knowledge from other native people and by studying notes from J.P. Harrington and other tribal members.  With this knowledge she has become a Cultural teacher and mentor Elder to the stewards of the Amah Mutsun Land Trust. She has worked out in the fields as cook\, prayer\, leader\, mentor\, and much more.  She also teaches her craft of beading at the Fresno American Indian Health Project in Fresno\, CA and at an annual Native youth camp.

Join science illustrator Meegan Painter of Seven Ravens Studio for a guided field illustration experience in Mima Meadow where we will observe some of our County’s most amazing native wildflowers. We’ll learn about flower anatomy and practice field sketching and painting techniques while learning to identify some of our local grassland flowers.
