DESCRIPTION:Teen Poetry Workshop | Our Places\, Our Perspectives with poet Emilie Lygren\nSaturday\, March 2\, 11am – 1:30pm \nHow can writing and reading poems help us navigate climate change and its impact on our mental health? In this workshop\, we’ll read and write poetry about place\, our environment\, and our community. To spark ideas for poems\, we’ll observe our surroundings\, reflect on our identities\, and call on our memories. We’ll also discuss how writing can connect us to our communities and ourselves. All levels of experience with poetry and writing are welcome to this free program! \nLight lunch will be provided by Erik’s Deli. \nOpen to anyone ages 11-18\, Register here \nAbout Poet Emilie Lygren\nEmilie Lygren is a poet and outdoor educator who writes at the intersections between scientific observation and poetic wonder. Emilie has developed dozens of publications and curricula focused on outdoor science education and social-emotional learning through her work with the award-winning BEETLES Project at the Lawrence Hall of Science. She’s also widely published as a poet\, and her poems appeared in Thimble Literary Magazine\, The English Leadership Quarterly\, and numerous anthologies. Emilie’s debut poetry collection\, What We Were Born For\, won the Blue Light Book award in 2021. In her writing and teaching\, Emilie centers awareness and curiosity as tools to bring people into deeper relationship with themselves\, their communities\, and the places they inhabit. Emilie holds a Bachelor’s degree in Geology-Biology from Brown University and an MFA in poetry from Maharishi International University. She lives in San Rafael\, California\, and spends much of her time wondering about oaks and teaching poetry in local classrooms.

Let your imagination run wild as you bring these ancient beasts back to life through your drawings\, sketches\, or collages.\n\nHow to Create Your Masterpiece?\nWe’ve got you covered with a special video tutorial from the talented science illustrator Hannah Caisse. Watch her as she reveals the secrets of painting an extinct Ice Age animal. From choosing your favorite creature to researching fascinating facts\, Hannah will guide you every step of the way. Get your creative gears turning and let the adventure begin!\n\nPrizes Await!\nBut wait\, there’s more! Three lucky winners (one from each age group) will be chosen to receive incredible prizes. Each winner will be awarded a one-year “Family Level Membership” to the museum\, granting you and your loved ones access to a world of wonders. And that’s not all! You’ll also receive a $25 gift certificate for our awesome Museum store\, filled with treasures waiting to be discovered.\n\nShow Off Your Skills!\nOnce your artwork is complete\, it’s time to make your mark on history. Submit your paleontological masterpiece to our museum contest. Capture a photo of your artwork (or scan it) and upload it to the submission portal. Brace yourself for the excitement of sharing your talent with the world!\n\nSubmit Art Work \n\nSubmit artwork as a high-resolution image of the student’s original artwork\, with a minimum size of 2\,400 pixels by 2\,400 pixels.\nEach file should be smaller than 5 Megabytes in size.\nArtwork must be in .jpg or .png format.\nArtwork is limited to one entry per student.\nArtwork has to be an animal that roamed North America during the Ice Age.\nArt can represent the following mediums: drawing and painting (i.e.\, pencil\, charcoal\, pastels\, colored pencils\, oil paints\, acrylics\, water media\, mixed media/collage) and original digital creations (which may not include AI or digital image generation of any kind).\nKeep the original artwork.
