Adult tickets are $15; $10 for 18 and under; all seats are reserved. \nMerriment and Self-Discovery: Elf The Musical Jr. Onstage \nBuddy\, a young orphan\, mistakenly crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and is transported to the North Pole. The would-be elf is raised\, unaware that he is actually a human\, until his enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the truth. With Santa’s permission\, Buddy embarks on a journey locate his birth father in New York City. \nBased on the beloved holiday film this hilarious fish-out-of-water comedy – as embodied onstage by Mount Madonna School’s (MMS) middle school cast – follows Buddy the elf in his quest to find his true identity. \nFaced with the harsh reality that his father is on the naughty list and that his half-brother doesn’t even believe in Santa\, Buddy is determined to win over his new family and help New York remember the true meaning of Christmas. \n“Elf the Musical Jr. is a sleigh ride through the core values of friendship\, openness and self-discovery  all served up with a generous helping of holiday cheer\,” commented Director Chelsea Otterness. “It’s a story that will entertain\, and also teach lessons our young cast will carry with them for life.” \n“The message of this story is that it is important to believe in things even if you think they are childish and silly\,” said eighth grader Jacqui Overson\, who plays the role of Jovi\, Buddy’s love interest. “You don’t need to be serious and sulky all the time. In the beginning\, Jovi was really grumpy and tired\, and I can relate to this being a middle school student. Teenager hormones make you grumpy! When you leave elementary school and get into middle school\, sometimes you start not wanting to do fun kid stuff\, and I feel that shouldn’t happen. You should continue to enjoy childlike things; better enjoy it while you can and don’t grow up in a negative sense!” \nEighth grader Deja Orozco is cast in the role of Santa Claus. \n“Santa wants people to be on the good list and doesn’t enjoy giving people coal\, said Orozco. Santa cares for people a lot\, and I really do care about my loved ones too. Santa Claus likes to teach the elves\, and I like to do this too; I teach my niece how to be caring and how to interact with people who aren’t being nice to her. As eighth graders\, we are leaders and care for our community\, the same way Santa does with his community.” \n“My character is Walter Hobbs and he seems scarred from his past\,” said eighth grader Aiden Powers. “His ex-wife died and now he has a son and new wife\, and only cares about his job. The story heats up as Sophie\, unbeknownst to Donna\, invites all three men to her wedding. \nPerformances are January 27 at 7:00pm\, January 28 at 2:00pm and a special sing-along performance is offered on January 29 at 2:00pm at the Hawks’ Nest Theater at Mount Madonna School. Please note: “Mamma Mia!” includes some mature-themed content and may not be suitable for young children. \nTickets are available at mms-mammamia.brownpapertickets.com. Adult tickets are $15; $10 for 18 and under; all seats are reserved. Tickets for the sing-along performance are $20. \nThe original musical premiered onstage in 1999 and was later adapted into a 2008 film starring Amanda Seyfried and Meryl Streep. \n“ABBA’s music will get the audience excited and up on its feet\,” commented junior Anya Gonzalez\, who plays Sophie in the MMS production. “In ‘Mamma Mia!’ there’s a universal theme of identity and the struggle revolving around finding one’s identity\, which is part of human nature. Sophie is a prime example of that in that she is attempting to find her dad to fill in the missing piece of herself. When Marty escapes\, the other three break free to look for him\, only to find themselves reunited on a ship en route to Mother Africa in the musical adventure “Madagascar Jr.\,” a crack-a-lackin’ story of friendship and teamwork as embodied onstage by Mount Madonna School’s (MMS) middle school cast.\n\nPerformances are December 10 and 11 at 2:00pm at the Hawks’ Nest Theater at MMS. Adult tickets are $15; $10 for 18 and under; all seats are reserved.
