Each shade told a story of the earth\, the seasons\, and the creativity of the people who lived here in the 1800’s. \nVisit the Castro Adobe open house to see the Santa Cruz Textile Art Guild demonstrating weaving and dyeing skills used in early California. Some of the dyes will actually be extracted from the flowers in the picture that were recently grown in Joe’s Garden on the Rancho \nOur open house will be on Saturday\, September 21 from 10:30 am to 3:30 pm. Our knowledgeable docents will be on hand to answer questions and share interesting facts. \nStroll through the Thomas Church designed garden while listening to live music by the Poet Laureate of Watsonville\, Bob Gomez accompanied by his talented wife Denise. Enjoy our many new interpretive displays showcasing the Castro family\, vaquero culture\, fandango dancing and bear and bull fights that were used to celebrate festive events. \nHoly cow! As summer approaches it’s time for the matanza! This annual slaughter of cattle took place in the summer and was extremely important in Alta California. Why were cows so important? Californios like Juan Jose Castro made their wealth in the cow hide and tallow trade\, which produced goods like soap\, candles\, and everything leather. Learn about the importance of the vacas in Alta California and how cows allowed the Castros to build their dream home we call the Castro Adobe. \nNiños\, come to the kids’ table and learn how to make a candle! DESCRIPTION:ParkStage Youth History Performance\n Mondays and Thursdays\, April 8 – May 16\, 3:30-5pm \nParkStage Youth is a new program for 8-13 year olds to learn and share history through performance. \nStudents will meet at the Santa Cruz Mission State Historic Park to learn and rehearse an original story of local Santa Cruz history. \nThey will perform twice outdoors on the lawn at the Mission State Park on the weekend of May 17th. Students will gather to research\, rehearse\, and perform a short play telling a story from Santa Cruz history. By the end of the process\, they should be comfortable understanding the motivations of their historical character\, and some of the pressures of life here in the time period. They will also be able to pass this story on in a complex and collaborative manner\, by performing the story clearly and honestly together\, for audiences in two performances. \nThis program is free as part of the offerings of California State Parks\, but a $20 material fee for set and props is asked per student.

Pick up Saturday\, May 20\, 9am – 1pm\n \nFriends of Santa Cruz State Parks today announced the annual Kitayama Brothers Farms Gerbera Festival will be celebrated May 20th\, 2023\, as Gerbera-N-Go\, a drive-through flower sale atKitayama Brothers Farms\, located at 481 San Andreas Road in Watsonville (next to Sunset State Beach). \nFlowers can be preordered at www.thatsmypark.org/collections beginning April 17 through May 17. All proceeds from Gerbera-N-Go benefit Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks\, supporting Kids2Parks\, an innovative park equity program that helps ensure all children in the community have equal access to state park field trips. \nFlowers will be available in crates of five plants each\, featuring a mix of colors. Preordered crates will be $15 each. A limited number of day-of sales also may be offered for $20 per crate (cash only). All flowers will be available for pickup from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday\, May 20. \n“Our love of local state parks and beaches began when my brother and I were children. We’ve raised our families in these special places\, especially Sunset State Beach just west of our farm\,” said Stuart Kitayama\, retired operations manager at Kitayama Brothers Farms and a Friends board member. “Providing support so future generations can experience the magic of state parks is important to us.” \nThis is the 13th year Kitayama Brothers Farms will celebrate the Gerbera Festival. The event was not held in 2020 due to the pandemic but was reimagined in 2021 as the wildly popular Gerbera-N-Go. Flowers have sold out the last two years\, raising thousands of dollars to support local state parks and beaches. \n“Our shared appreciation of local state parks and beaches — and belief in providing access for all — is at the heart of our relationship with Kitayama Brothers Farms\,” Friends Executive Director Bonny Hawley said. “We are grateful for KB Farms’ longstanding commitment to the Gerbera Festival and appreciate this year’s focus on raising funds to support field trips to local state parks and beaches.” \nGerbera daisies are bright\, colorful flowers with large blooms and strong stems.
