DESCRIPTION:Race the Wave\nSaturday\, September 13\, 8am-12pm \nAre you ready? If you had to escape a tsunami event in Santa Cruz how long would it take you to run or walk to high ground? Would you know which way to go? Here’s your chance to test yourself and gain some knowledge about tsunamis and their impact on our community. \nBe part of the first race to start on the Santa Cruz Wharf! \nAdults are only $20 and kids 12 and under are $10. This will automatically be calculated at check-out. \nBackground\nRace the Wave combines a functional evacuation exercise\, a community fun run\, and an emergency preparedness fair hosted by the City of Santa Cruz during National Preparedness Month. \nThis event reinforces the City’s commitment to tsunami preparedness and hazard mitigation while highlighting the shared responsibility to protect public infrastructure\, such as the Wharf. \nParticipants will follow an evacuation route from a high-risk coastal location on the Santa Cruz Wharf to higher ground. The race begins on the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf\, follows Pacific Avenue through the downtown area and concludes at Mission Plaza Park\, outside the updated maximum tsunami inundation zone. \nAt the finish line\, an emergency preparedness fair will bring together City departments and community-based organizations to share emergency preparedness information with the community. The fair will focus community attention on the need for 72 hours of personal and household preparedness.

In this workshop\, we will build a vermicomposting bin together\, discuss best practices for maintaining a bin\, and discuss strategies for reducing wasted food and why it matters. For those ready to start their vermicomposting journey\, we will also offer basic supplies for a “DIY” worm bin tower. \nCastings or “black gold” created from worm composting systems offer a hefty dose of healthy microorganisms and other benefits for your garden and soils. Caring for a worm bin gives you gold for your garden and can contribute to a sense of well-being. \nIf you already have a worm bin that could use some attention\, feel free to sign up and bring your questions and photos! DESCRIPTION:Recycle Right! Boot Camp\nSaturday March 15\, 10am – 1pm \nThe Recycle Right! Boot Camp is back and we are hosting this class in-person\, on-site at our Resource Recovery Facility. \nSaturday March 15\, 10am – 1pm. Come join us if you can\, spaces fill up quickly! \nClass is limited to 25 people. Children must be at least 8 years old. Youth ages 8 -18 must be accompanied by an adult. All participants must wear closed-toe shoes and long pants. Come prepared for the weather. \nCarpooling/biking is encouraged as parking is limited. \nYou will learn about the history of recycling\, what happens with your recycling\, and how to move beyond the blue bin! Plus a lengthy Q&A session will be offered (come prepared with all your waste reduction questions!) \nVisitors will see what happens to the 30 to 50 tons of material that Santa Cruzians place into their blue recycle bins every single day. They will learn why it is important to “recycle right” and avoid “wish-cycling.” Visitors will also see a mountain of scrap metal\, learn about the facility’s Household Hazardous Waste Program and see the Food Scrap Pre-Processor Machine. \nPre-registration is required here. No drop-ins. All participants must sign a waiver to go on the tour – a follow up email with more information will be sent once you have registered.

These short-course outrigger races are designed especially for the new or novice paddlers. Come out and support the aloha outrigger racers as well as enjoy hula performances by Kūhai Hālau O Mehanakealohakalaua’eikapoli Pā ‘Ōlapa Kahiko at 1:30PM! \nGet ready for the 31st Annual Aloha Outrigger Races! These short-course outrigger races are designed especially for the new or novice paddlers. You provide four people and we provide a canoe plus steer-person and stroker from the Pu Pu ‘O Hawaii Outrigger Club. Let us know you are coming and get weekly updates on our Facebook Event! \nTEAMS  \nEnter a 4-person crew Online and we will provide a stroker\, steer-person and all necessary equipment with enough instruction to get you racing. Ability to swim required. Children must be at least twelve years of age. Members of an active outrigger paddling association (i.e. NCOCA and SCORA) are not eligible to be on a team but may volunteer as a stroker or steer-person. Among his best-known stories are “The SnowQueen\,” “The Little Mermaid\,” “Thumbelina\,” “The Little Match Girl\,” “The Ugly Duckling\,” and “The Red Shoes.” During Andersen’s lifetime he was respected by royalty and acclaimed for having brought joy to children across Europe. His fairy tales have been translated into over 150 languages and continue to be published in millions of copies all over the world inspiring many other works. \nAndersen was also a poet\, and his verse has been set to music by such composers as Grieg\, Nielsen and Schumann. Among musical adaptations are Prokofiev’s song The Ugly Duckling\, Mary Rodgers’ musical Once Upon a Mattress (based on “The Princess and the Pea”)\, and Disney’s animated feature The Little Mermaid.
