SUMMARY:Nature Journal Studio
DESCRIPTION:Nature Journal Studio\n2nd Wednesdaysof the month\,  6:30 – 8pm \nNature journaling can help us view the natural world with new perspectives\, learn about our surroundings\, and see the extraordinary in the ordinary.  During monthly Nature Journal Studio sessions at the Museum\, Melinda Nakagawa will guide you through a topic as we practice skills in a group setting and share our learning with others. We will develop observation skills and awareness of nature\, improve sketching skills\, and practice strategies to bring the 3-dimensional world onto the page. Rather than an art class\, nature journaling is about observation\, curiosity\, wonder\, and honing these abilities.\n\nFree with Admission Register\n\nSign-up for other Nature Journal Studio events.\n\n*Free for Members and Youth under 18 | $4 General | $2 Students and Seniors \n\nAbout Melinda Nakagawa\nMelinda Nakagawa is a biologist\, naturalist\, and educator with a passion and skill for connecting people to nature. She founded Spark in Nature to guide participants to cultivate a deeper relationship with the natural world\, slowing down to nature’s pace and seeing rather than just looking at the world.  With an approach that bridges nature\, art\, and heart\, she welcomes all people regardless of their skill level or background. Through her gentle guidance\, hundreds of participants have awakened their spark of curiosity\, sense of wonder\, and connection to the natural world.  Melinda has partnered with local institutions such as the world-renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium and Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History to lead educator trainings on nature journaling. She leads the Monterey Bay Nature Journal Club’s free online Sunday sessions.  She has an M.S. degree in Marine Science\, and has also worked as a naturalist guide\, floral designer\, and wildlife rehabilitator. For the past two decades Melinda has kept nature journals and continues to learn more from nature with each journal she fills.\n

SUMMARY:Snazzy Productions presents Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley
DESCRIPTION:Snazzy Productions presents Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley\nFriday\, August 15\, 7:30-9:30pm \nRenowned duo Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley will perform at Scotts Valley Cultural and Performing Arts Center.  Snazzy Productions is thrilled to announce a special evening featuring Grammy-nominated artists Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley at the Scotts Valley Cultural and Performing Arts Center on August 15. \nRob Ickes\, a 15-time International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Dobro Player of the Year\, and Trey Hensley\, celebrated for his rich baritone voice and masterful guitar skills\, have garnered acclaim for their unique blend of bluegrass\, country\, blues\, and Americana. Together\, they promise an unforgettable performance showcasing their virtuosity and deep musical chemistry. \n“We are delighted to bring Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley to Scotts Valley\,” said Luke Hess\, of Snazzy Productions. “Their talent and passion for music resonate with audiences of all tastes\, and we’re confident that this event will be a highlight of our summer concert series. SUMMARY:Santa Cruz Shakespeare's The Importance of Being Earnest
DESCRIPTION:Santa Cruz Shakespeare’s The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde\nJuly 14 – September 7\, with Opening Night on July 19 \nSanta Cruz Shakespeare\, a nationally recognized professional theater company in Santa Cruz County with deep local roots that go back more than 40 years\, invites you to experience Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest\, under the trees and stars of the Audrey Stanley Grove in Santa Cruz’s DeLaveaga Park this summer. \nOscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest has not been done in the 42-year history of Santa Cruz Shakespeare. It is one of the greatest comedies ever written\, filled with some of the sharpest wit in the English language. The most iconic figure of this masterpiece is the formidable Lady Bracknell; obsessed with tradition and propriety\, she cannot countenance her daughter Gwendolyn’s love of our titular Earnest. It’s not his money she objects to\, of which he has plenty\, but his bloodline: he has seemingly\, and famously\, descended from a HANDBAG. At least\, that’s where he was discovered as an orphan. The young strain and contrive against their elder’s conservatism; through \nfantasy\, imagination\, and so much wit\, they will reshape the world; redefining\, and renaming\, love’s conventions. \nThe Importance of Being Earnest runs July 14-September 7\, with Opening Night on July 19. \nPurchase tickets after May 1 and get more information at santacruzshakespeare.org/season-2024 \nSeasonal box office hours are Tuesday through Thursday from 12p.m. to 4p.m. beginning June 1. SUMMARY:Blacksmith Hammer-In at Roaring Camp
DESCRIPTION:Blacksmith Hammer-In\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriday & Saturday\, August 16-17\, 8am-9pm\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe California Blacksmith Association Presents – The 8th Annual Hammer-In at Roaring Camp Railroads. \nWatch demonstrators push the boundaries of hot metal\, bring ancient techniques to life and share with the community their talent and dedication to the blacksmith craft. \nRead the article from the San Lorenzo Valley Post: https://slvpost.com/roaring-camp-blacksmith-hammer-in-august-16-17/\n \n\n By Anna Bobisuthi\n\n\n\nWelcome to another great year of forging in the redwoods! It’s time once again for Roaring Camp’s annual Hammer-In\, a spectacular event with blacksmiths from all over California meeting up for a weekend of fun and education! The event runs August 16 and 17 from 8 am to 5 pm. Organized by Bill Kasper\, the California Blacksmith Association(CBA) and hosted by Roaring Camp. It’s fun for the whole family! Come watch 50 blacksmiths forge for the weekend\, ask questions and see the sparks fly\, OR if you’re a member of the CBA you can sign up and forge yourself! This event is great for beginners and experts alike! \nAmazing demonstrators for the weekend are: \nEllen Durken – Creating “Forged Fashion” Ellen has been working in metal for 15 years and her current body of work is wearable forged art\, embracing physical and emotional vulnerability to decorate the body as visual and metaphorical armor. With a Graduate Degree in Fine Arts she demonstrates and teaches classes internationally. She’s coming all the way from Delaware to demonstrate for us and we are ecstatic to have her. \nJake Trogden – Jake was introduced to metal work at an early age and was immediately fascinated and that fascination turned into a lifelong passion. A mainstay at CBA conferences and events\, teaching has allowed Jake to share his love for metalwork with others and continue to be a student himself. \nJohn Barron – John will be demonstrating how to forge a copper and steel rose. A masterful blacksmith in Georgetown\, CA\, John first started working with metal in 1975 and specializes in architectural ironwork. \nMark Aspery and David Thayer – Hands on Projects this year are a Suffolk Latch and a Trivet. Our education team is amazing and great working with smiths of all ages and skill levels\, plus they’re a ton of fun! Mark Aspery has literally written the book on blacksmithing! \nThis event was started by Frank Golding in 2016 and this is the 8th year we’ve held it. We are only able to organize this great event with support from the CBA which is a nonprofit blacksmithing association that holds workshops\, classes\, and conferences all over California. This event raises money for the organization and acts as a great education opportunity. If you have any questions feel free to stop by Roaring Camp on the weekends and talk to our resident blacksmiths. While we have blacksmiths at Roaring Camp year round\, the Hammer-In only comes around once a year and is not to be missed. We hope to see you there!

Call 831-460-6399. \n  \nAbout Santa Cruz Shakespeare – Featuring professional actors from around the country and inspired by deep local roots that go back more than 40 years\, Santa Cruz Shakespeare stages bold productions of the plays of Shakespeare and other great playwrights that stimulate audiences’ senses and spark their imagination. SUMMARY:National Honey Bee Day Movie & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:National Honey Bee Day Movie & Discussion La Selva Beach\nSaturday\, August 17\, 1 – 2:30pm \n\nCelebrate National Honey Bee Day with us.  See bees like you’ve never seen them before in the PBS Nature documentary\, My Garden of a Thousand Bees. \nLocked down during the coronavirus pandemic\, acclaimed wildlife filmmaker Martin Dohrn set out to record all the bee species in his tiny urban garden in Bristol\, England. Filming with one-of-a-kind lenses he forged at his kitchen table\, he catalogues more than 60 different species\, from Britain’s largest bumblebees to scissor bees the size of mosquitoes. Over long months\, Dohrn observes how differences in behavior set different species apart. He\, eventually\, gets so close to the bees he can identify individuals by sight\, documenting life at their level as we have never seen it before. \nAfter the film\, there will be time for discussion with local beekeeper Richard Smith. \nWe are pleased to offer this My Garden of a Thousand Bees screening as part of the nationwide #PlantWildflowers campaign that highlights the critical role bees and other pollinators play in healthy ecosystems. \nIn support of the film\, My Garden of a Thousand Bees\, HHMI Tangled Bank Studios and PBS Nature launched the #PlantWildflowers campaign to encourage communities.
