SUMMARY:Santa Cruz B.L.A.C.K. Film Series
DESCRIPTION:Santa Cruz B.L.A.C.K. Film Series\nTuesdays\, 6:30pm-9pm\, February 20\, March 19\, April 16\, May 14\, Wednesday\, June 18\n \n\n\n\nSCPL is pleased to partner with Santa Cruz Black on their  Santa Cruz Black Film Series to provide additional opportunities to watch and discuss these important films. \nB.L.A.C.K. On Screen is a five-documentary film series focusing on the themes behind our acronym BLACK: Building Legacies of Access in Communities of Kinship. \nStarting this month through June\, screenings will be the 3rd Tuesday at the Resource Center for Nonviolence and the 3rd Wednesday of the month at the Capitola Branch Library. Doors open at 6:15\, screenings begin at 6:30. \nWhose Streets? is February’s film. Watch the trailer here . Each screening will be followed by a discussion and/or Q&A. Some of the filmmakers will be participating. Stay tuned! \nABOUT THE FILM When unarmed black teenager Michael Brown was killed by a white police officer in Ferguson\, Missouri\, and left lying in the street for hours\, it marked a breaking point for the residents of the St. Louis area and beyond. Uniting people from the community and across the nation\, a movement-propelled by young activists and Ferguson community members-was born. Told by the local residents and activists on the front lines fighting for justice\, equality and an end to police brutality\, Whose Streets? is an unflinching look at the Ferguson uprising and the movement that followed. \nThe series continues with: March 20\, Tell Them We Are Rising. The Story of Black Colleges and Universities explores the pivotal role historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have played over the course of 150 years. \nApril 17\, Against All Odds: The Fight for The Black Middle Class. Acclaimed journalist Bob Herbert asks\, “Have Black Americans had a fair shot at the American dream?” He probes the harsh and often brutal discrimination that has made it extremely difficult for African-Americans to establish a middle-class standard of living\, while also exploring the often heroic efforts of Black families to pursue the American Dream in the face of unrelenting barriers. \nMay 22\, The Taking of Harris Neck: 80 years of Injustice for the Gullah People. The stunning marshlands of Harris Neck\, Georgia have a tragic history. In 1942\, the US government took 2687 acres of land inhabited by descendants of freed slaves to build an airbase. The government promised to give the land back after the war. Now 80 years later the community is still fighting to get their land back. The Taking of Harris Neck tells a story of trauma and racism – and the perseverance to overcome against all odds. \nJune 19\, Decendent follows decendents of the survivors from the Clotilda\, the last ship that carried enslaved Africans to the United States\, as they reclaim their story.

SUMMARY:Downtown Farmers Market 2022
DESCRIPTION:Downtown Farmers Market\nWednesdays\, May – Oct 1 – 6pm; Nov – April 1 – 5pm \nThe Downtown Santa Cruz Market runs year-round on Wednesdays\, 1-6pm May through October and 1-5pm November through April. Our largest and oldest market\, it is situated in the heart of Downtown Santa Cruz\, one block off of Pacific Avenue. Established in 1990\, many of the farms that sell here were and remain pillars of the organic and ecological farming movement. This is the place to eat with the seasons! The variety of fruits\, vegetables\, flowers\, pastured meats and other products is swoon worthy. \nThe Downtown Market also spotlights a large variety of up-and-coming\, unique cultural food businesses. This weekly spot may serve up the most diverse selection of ethnic foods in the county including momo\, naan and curry\, Japanese fermented misos\, Eritrean dishes\, crepes\, El Salvadorean pupusas\, traditional Italian cookies\, fish and chips and long-ferment fresh breads. Shopping at the Wednesday market is a wonderful way to support regional responsible farms and small local businesses. Fill your grocery bags! Then sit down for a delightful meal and rest your weary arms. \n

SUMMARY:Santa Cruz B.L.A.C.K. Film Series
DESCRIPTION:Santa Cruz B.L.A.C.K. Film Series\nWednesdays\, 6:30pm-9pm\, February 21\, March 20\, April 17\, May 15\, Wednesday\, June 19\n \n\n\n\nSCPL is pleased to partner with Santa Cruz Black on their 2024 Santa Cruz Black Film Series to provide additional opportunities to watch and discuss these important films.

SUMMARY:Against All Odds Film
DESCRIPTION:Against All Odds\nWednesday\, April 17\, 6:30-9pm \nSanta Cruz Black Film Series: Against All Odds: The Fight for The Black Middle Class\n\nSCPL is pleased to partner with Santa Cruz Black on their 2024 Santa Cruz Black Film Series to provide additional opportunities to watch and discuss these important films. \nB.L.A.C.K. On Screen is a five-documentary film series focusing on the themes behind our acronym BLACK: Building Legacies of Access in Communities of Kinship. \nThrough June\, screenings will be the 3rd Tuesday at the Resource Center for Nonviolence and the 3rd Wednesday of the month at the Capitola Branch Library. Doors open at 6:00\, screenings begin at 6:30. Registration/RSVP is not required\, but recommended to help us plan. RSVP for the Tuesday screening at the Resource Center for Noviolence HERE. Or register for the Wednesday Capitola screening below. \nAgainst All Odds: The Fight for The Black Middle Class is April’s film. Watch the trailer here. \nEach screening will be followed by a discussion and/or Q&A. Some of the filmmakers will be participating. Stay tuned! \nABOUT THE FILM \nNew York Times Journalist Bob Herbert narrates this documentary about the extraordinary difficulty African-Americans have faced in their efforts to establish and maintain a middle class standard of living. The film will surprise a lot of people. The black middle class has never been as large or as robust as most Americans – including most black Americans – have wanted to believe. Nearly 40 percent of all black children are poor. For every dollar of wealth in the hands of the average white family\, the typical black family has only a little more than a nickel. And the devastating effects of the Great Recession and housing foreclosure crisis\, which hit blacks much harder than whites\, left the black middle class virtually on life support. With a compelling narrative\, dramatic historical footage and a series of deeply personal interviews\, Bob Herbert explains why this disturbing and often tragic state of affairs exists a century and a half after slavery and a half-century after the heyday of the civil rights movement. \nThe series continues with: \nMay 22 – The Taking of Harris Neck: 80 years of Injustice for the Gullah People. \nJune 19 – Descendant. Follows descendants of the survivors from the Clotilda\, the last ship that carried enslaved Africans to the United States\, as they reclaim their story.
