SUMMARY:Elf the Musical Jr by Mount Madonna Students
DESCRIPTION:Elf the Musical Jr by Mount Madonna Students\nSaturday & Sunday\, December 9 & 10\, 2pm \nBased on the beloved holiday film\, “Elf The Musical Jr.\,” a hilarious fish-out-of-water comedy – as embodied onstage by Mount Madonna School’s (MMS) middle school cast – follows Buddy the elf in his quest to find his true identity. \nPerformances are December 9 and 10 at 2:00pm at Mount Madonna School’s Hawks’ Nest Theater. \nTickets on sale November 1 at mms-elfthemusical.brownpapertickets.com. Adult tickets are $15; $10 for 18 and under; all seats are reserved. \nMerriment and Self-Discovery: Elf The Musical Jr. Onstage \nBuddy\, a young orphan\, mistakenly crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and is transported to the North Pole. The would-be elf is raised\, unaware that he is actually a human\, until his enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the truth. With Santa’s permission\, Buddy embarks on a journey locate his birth father in New York City. \nBased on the beloved holiday film this hilarious fish-out-of-water comedy – as embodied onstage by Mount Madonna School’s (MMS) middle school cast – follows Buddy the elf in his quest to find his true identity. \nFaced with the harsh reality that his father is on the naughty list and that his half-brother doesn’t even believe in Santa\, Buddy is determined to win over his new family and help New York remember the true meaning of Christmas. \n“Elf the Musical Jr. is a sleigh ride through the core values of friendship\, openness and self-discovery  all served up with a generous helping of holiday cheer\,” commented Director Chelsea Otterness. “It’s a story that will entertain\, and also teach lessons our young cast will carry with them for life.” \n“The message of this story is that it is important to believe in things even if you think they are childish and silly\,” said eighth grader Jacqui Overson\, who plays the role of Jovi\, Buddy’s love interest. “You don’t need to be serious and sulky all the time. In the beginning\, Jovi was really grumpy and tired\, and I can relate to this being a middle school student. Teenager hormones make you grumpy! When you leave elementary school and get into middle school\, sometimes you start not wanting to do fun kid stuff\, and I feel that shouldn’t happen. You should continue to enjoy childlike things; better enjoy it while you can and don’t grow up in a negative sense!” \nEighth grader Deja Orozco is cast in the role of Santa Claus. \n“Santa wants people to be on the good list and doesn’t enjoy giving people coal\, said Orozco. Santa cares for people a lot\, and I really do care about my loved ones too. Santa Claus likes to teach the elves\, and I like to do this too; I teach my niece how to be caring and how to interact with people who aren’t being nice to her. As eighth graders\, we are leaders and care for our community\, the same way Santa does with his community.” \n“My character is Walter Hobbs and he seems scarred from his past\,” said eighth grader Aiden Powers. “His ex-wife died and now he has a son and new wife\, and only cares about his job. During the story\, he shows growth; at first he doesn’t care about his family and then he learns how to embrace family.” \nOriginally produced by Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures in association with Unique Features\, Elf The Musical Jr. is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.MTIShows.com. \nMount Madonna School has a longstanding tradition of performing arts for students preschool through high school; and beyond outstanding performances\, engaging in performing arts prepares students for life well beyond the stage. \n“Performing arts prepares you for public speaking\,” said Powers. “The experience  saying lines and singing on a stage  makes it easier to talk in front of anyone.” \nJoin Mount Madonna students to let the laughter roll\, the joy overflow and the merriment run wild  its going to be a jolly good time! \nhttps://mms-elfthemusical.brownpapertickets.com/

SUMMARY:The Best Christmas Pageant Ever
DESCRIPTION:The Best Christmas Pageant Ever\nDecember 8 and 9\, 7:30pm; December 9 and 10\, 2pm \nJoin us a our local theater company\, Scotts Valley Performing Arts\, presents The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. \nBased on the children’s novel of the same name written by Barbara Robinson\, it is a hilarious romp through anything but what the title implies. The six Herdman children – Imogene\, Ralph\, Claude\, Leroy\, Ollie\, and Gladys – are considered to be juvenile delinquents and misfits notorious for their rowdy behavior. They go to Sunday school for the first time after being told that the church offers free snacks and proceed to hijack the pageant by volunteering for all the lead roles in the Christmas pageant. \nSince they’ve bullied all the usual cast members into remaining silent during the call for volunteers\, the director has no choice but to cast them. The result is shock\, awe and pandemonium but with a very nice twist of an ending. \nTickets are available at https://www.onthestage.tickets/…/6541ab1bc7ea1e…/tickets \n\n\nAdult $25 | Senior/Student $20 | Child $15For more information about SVPA\, visit SVPAShows.org \nPerforming Arts Center\, 251B Kings Village Rd\, Scotts Valley (next to the SV Library)

SUMMARY:Jingle Bell Rock Race on West Cliff
DESCRIPTION:Jingle Bell Rock Race on West Cliff\nSunday\, December 10\, 9am Kids 1K;  9:15 Adults 5K\n \nKids 1K map   ~   Adults 5K map \nJoin our annual year end Jingle Bell Rock race\, 1K for kids 10 and under and a 5K for kids and adults! \nThis is a benchmark event for us – we are retiring from the event production side of our company and this will be our very last produced event!  So please come out and give this event a big community send off. \nThis event has always had a focus on community and participation versus competition!  The award structure is simple – top 3 overall in the 1K and 5K are eligible awards.  You will be able to select your option during registration.  The fun is not optional!  Everyone will have a great time. \nWe’re expanding our outlook this year.  It’s not just about toys.  It’s about supporting a broader cause in our community.  Our beneficiary is still The Salvation Army of Santa Cruz County.  But our “ask” is changing a bit along with the times and needs of Salvation Army.  In addition to toys they really need blankets and gently warn coats to support the community. \nAt this time we are not planning on community drop off locations this year – everything will be collected at the race and given directly to Salvation Army at the event. \nStill the same great race – a 1K for kids 10 and under and a 5K for kids and adults.  You can get some exercise before you head off to other holiday events! This event makes a huge difference in our community! Please come out and give all the support you can. \nKid’s 1K will start at 9:00am\, and will not be timed with the top 3 boys and girls under 10 receiving special recognition.  Each participant in the 1K will receive a jingle bell as a finisher’s award. \nThe 5K  will have an option to be timed and start at approximately 9:15 after the 1K finishes.  Runners will line up and go first\, followed by the walkers.  If you have a stroller we ask that you position yourself appropriately for the run or the walk. \nThe course for this event can be viewed under the course map links listed on the menu above.  The course will be along West Cliff Drive from the Lighthouse by the Surfer Museum. \nNew This Year – Multi-Person Pricing for Families\, Groups\, and Teams \nDuring registration you can register multiple people on a single registration. If you register a group of 2 or more each person registered will get a $5 discount off the event price.  You can mix and match 5K and 1K registrations.  No other group discounts will apply to the multiple registration discounts. \nAward Categories \n\nTop 3 Boys and Girls in the 1K\nTop 3 Male and Female in the 5K (you must select timing option if you want to be eligible for an award).\nPlus the special fun award categories for the best dressed runner who comes decked out in holiday running wear\, the best dressed team\, the best holiday ugly sweater\, and the best decorated stroller participant\, and the best dressed canine running companion costume. We’ll also do an award for the best volunteer outfits or team of volunteers! Get busy and get creative. See you at the Jingle Bell Rock.

Who celebrated Yule and why? Were reindeer ever involved? What’s the deal with the Yule Log and… goat? And where did this figure of Father Christmas and his shadow\, Krampus\, come from? Some of the answers may surprise you! Find out on this journey through the pagan tapestry of history and folklore\, much of which is still thriving in our modern celebrations. \nFor centuries\, cultures have celebrated the winter solstice for it heralded the rebirth of the sun and assured the promise of warmer days\, more light\, and a new growing season. Marking this celestial event with ritual and celebration in the northern hemisphere may be as old as humankind. These 2 Yuletide gatherings are designed to offer as much breadth and depth to the season as possible. \nTickets \nYour presenter is local “wild authoress\,” Kellie (K.M.) Rice.
