SUMMARY:FashionTeens at Rio Theatre
DESCRIPTION:FashionTeens at Rio Theatre\nFriday\, April 19\, 6:30 – 8:30pm \n\n\n\nFashionTeens is a countywide event where students in grades 6-12 showcase wearable clothing that is made from recycled\, upcycled or re-used materials. \n\n\n\n\nFor 13 years\, FashionTeens has been bringing teenagers from across Santa Cruz County together for a fabulous\, fashion runway evening. After working for months\, students with a passion for fashion and creativity design\, source\, create\, construct and showcase their own unique piece of fashion art. With a focus on the environment and the impact we have on it\, most creations are made from recycled or repurposed items giving new value to what otherwise would end up in our landfill. By literally taking fashion into their own hands\, students express their creativity\, gain design and engineering skills\, explore complex social issues\, experience creative problem-solving\, gain confidence and learn valuable life skills. \nAfter all their hard work\, there is nothing more rewarding than the excited\, beaming faces of these teenagers as they walk the runway in front of cheering crowds. We hope you will join us for this year’s production of FashionTeens! \nFashionTeens began at Mission Hills Middle School 13 years ago and now encompasses all of Santa Cruz County. We have had participants from over thirteen different schools across the county. Teachers\, mentors and volunteers support the creative endeavors of each student throughout the process. Today\, FashionTeens is a production of the Santa Cruz County Office of Education. \nBe sure to save your space: Advance free tickets: www.fashionteens-santacruz.com

Told by the local residents and activists on the front lines fighting for justice\, equality and an end to police brutality\, Whose Streets? is an unflinching look at the Ferguson uprising and the movement that followed. \nThe series continues with: March 20\, Tell Them We Are Rising. The Story of Black Colleges and Universities explores the pivotal role historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have played over the course of 150 years. \nApril 17\, Against All Odds: The Fight for The Black Middle Class. Acclaimed journalist Bob Herbert asks\, “Have Black Americans had a fair shot at the American dream?” He probes the harsh and often brutal discrimination that has made it extremely difficult for African-Americans to establish a middle-class standard of living\, while also exploring the often heroic efforts of Black families to pursue the American Dream in the face of unrelenting barriers. \nMay 22\, The Taking of Harris Neck: 80 years of Injustice for the Gullah People. The stunning marshlands of Harris Neck\, Georgia have a tragic history. In 1942\, the US government took 2687 acres of land inhabited by descendants of freed slaves to build an airbase. The government promised to give the land back after the war. Now 80 years later the community is still fighting to get their land back. The Taking of Harris Neck tells a story of trauma and racism – and the perseverance to overcome against all odds. \nJune 19\, Decendent follows decendents of the survivors from the Clotilda\, the last ship that carried enslaved Africans to the United States\, as they reclaim their story.
