SUMMARY:Focus on Fire Series
DESCRIPTION:Focus on Fire Series\nOctober 27\, 6:30 – 7:30pm\n\n10/27- A Landscape Built to Burn: Fire in Our State Parks\nLearn about fire ecology in California in general\, local native plant adaptations to fire\, and the specific response to the CZU fire at the Fall Creek\, Big Basin and Butano State Parks.\nThis presentation’s goal is to make people aware of the impacts that the CZU fire has had on local environments and answer questions that they may have about the future of those parks.\n\n\nPrevious in the Series\n\n10/13- The CZU Fire In Their Own Words: Fighting Fires\, Losing Homes\, and Rebuilding Community\nIn this moving and powerful film\, actors use the words of people who fought the fires and those who lost their homes\, speaking about evacuating\, losing homes and possessions\, battling with insurance companies\, and getting community support. Photos and videos from the families and local photographers are woven in. Following the film\, the director will answer questions. The film was created and directed by Peter Gelblum and produced by Mountain Community Theater. The director and others associated with the film will be there to answer questions.\nThe film screening is from 5-6:30 followed by a Q &A with the director 6:30-7pm.\n\n10/20- People and Fire in California: Then and Now\nThis presentation will trace the history and shifts in how people view\, interact with\, and utilize fire in California\, from Indigenous stewardship practices through the era of fire suppression and into the burgeoning movement of community-led land management using prescribed fire. Connections between changing fire regimes and the composition of landscapes and human communities are highlighted through historical frameworks and interviews conducted over the past several years with California residents on the topics of wildland fire and prescribed fire use.

SUMMARY:Ancestor Journeys with guest speaker Gail Burk
DESCRIPTION:Ancestor Journeys with guest speaker\, Gail Burk\n\nJanuary 3\, 1 – 2:30pm \nThe Ancestor Journeys program will explore prompts to inspire genealogists to write a story about an ancestor’s journey. The journey might be geographical\, circumstantial\,psychological\, or metaphorical. An ancestor’s journey may have been optimistic\, adventurous\, tragic\, practical\, religious\, or interior. An ancestor may have experienced more than one type of journey. Each of our ancestors has undertaken a journey of one kind or another. Many ancestors will have traveled on several journeys over the course of a lifetime. The prompts can also be used to write about our own journeys. \nGail Burk is a long-time member of the Genealogical Society of Santa Cruz County and has served in a number of Board positions\, including President. Currently\, she co-chairs the Society’s DNA Special Interest Group\, is a volunteer staffer for the Society in the Genealogy Room at the downtown Santa Cruz Library\, and is working on an index to the Tina Brayton Collection\, which is in the process of being digitized. Gail has delivered a variety of programs in the Monterey Bay area. Gail graduated from the University of California at Santa Barbara\, where she majored in art and minored in history. She has been an active genealogist for more than 40 years. \n\nThis is an online event. Event URL will be sent via registration email.
