SUMMARY:Rescue Readers at the Santa Cruz SPCA Tuesdays
DESCRIPTION:Rescue Readers at the Santa Cruz SPCA\n 4 – 4:30pm\nTuesdays: September 12\, 26\, October 10\, 24\, 31\, November 14\, December 5\, 19\nThursdays: September 14\, 28\, October 12\, 26\, November 2\, 16\, December 7\, 21 \nCome read to our cats and dogs at the Santa Cruz SPCA! Students can build confidence and fluency with their reading while our rescued shelter animals are soothed by the rhythms of language and nuzzle closer. Bring your own books or use some of ours! What a great way to spend time with our animals and gain their trust. Book now! \nDo you have an emerging reader on your hands who might benefit from practicing their reading with a non-judgmental animal audience? SPCA Rescue Readers will give your reader the chance to practice their reading aloud to both dogs and cats\, but it also offers comfort and stress relief to those shelter animals at the same time. It is a win-win for everyone! \nWe have only one student or one family of students signing up for each Rescue Readers session. They happen on alternating Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-4:30pm. Students can read to both cats and dogs as long as they have a parent accompany them. (Maximum number of readers is 10) \nRegister: https://spcasc.org/events/fall-2023-rescue-readers/

SUMMARY:Downtown Farmers Market 2022
DESCRIPTION:Downtown Farmers Market\nWednesdays\, May – Oct 1 – 6pm; Nov – April 1 – 5pm \nThe Downtown Santa Cruz Market runs year-round on Wednesdays\, 1-6pm May through October and 1-5pm November through April. Our largest and oldest market\, it is situated in the heart of Downtown Santa Cruz\, one block off of Pacific Avenue. Established in 1990\, many of the farms that sell here were and remain pillars of the organic and ecological farming movement. This is the place to eat with the seasons! The variety of fruits\, vegetables\, flowers\, pastured meats and other products is swoon worthy. \nThe Downtown Market also spotlights a large variety of up-and-coming\, unique cultural food businesses. This weekly spot may serve up the most diverse selection of ethnic foods in the county including momo\, naan and curry\, Japanese fermented misos\, Eritrean dishes\, crepes\, El Salvadorean pupusas\, traditional Italian cookies\, fish and chips and long-ferment fresh breads. Shopping at the Wednesday market is a wonderful way to support regional responsible farms and small local businesses. Fill your grocery bags! Then sit down for a delightful meal and rest your weary arms. \n

SUMMARY:Bookshop Santa Cruz Presents: Jacqueline Woodson | Remember Us
DESCRIPTION:Bookshop Santa Cruz Presents: Jacqueline Woodson | Remember Us\nWednesday\, October 25\, 6 – 7pm \nFree In-store Event \nJoin us to welcome acclaimed author and National Book Award winner Jacqueline Woodson (Brown Girl Dreaming) to the store for a reading and signing of her new middle grade novel\, Remember Us\, which has received starred reviews from Kirkus Reviews\, Horn Book\, School Library Journal\, Publishers Weekly\, and Booklist. \nThis powerful story delves deeply into life’s burning questions about time and memory and what we take with us into the future. \n“It seems like Sage’s whole world is on fire the summer before she starts seventh grade. As house after house burns down\, her Bushwick neighborhood gets referred to as “The Matchbox” in the local newspaper. And while Sage prefers to spend her time shooting hoops with the guys\, she’s also still trying to figure out her place inside the circle of girls she’s known since childhood. A group that each day\, feels further and further away from her. But it’s also the summer of Freddy\, a new kid who truly gets Sage. Together\, they reckon with the pain of missing the things that get left behind as time moves on\, savor what’s good in the present\, and buoy each other up in the face of destruction. And when the future comes\, it is Sage’s memories of the past that show her the way forward. Remember Us speaks to the power of both letting go . . . and holding on.”

SUMMARY:Wilder Ranch Kid Day
DESCRIPTION:Wilder Ranch Kid Day\nOctober 26\, 11am – 3pm \nHome school families – Mark your calendars for the second annual Home School Wilder Ranch Kid Day event! It’s the perfect opportunity to enhance your third and fourth grade pioneer studies curriculum. \nParking $10 \nWilder Ranch State Park is a California State Park on the Pacific Ocean coast north of Santa Cruz\, California. The park was formerly a dairy ranch\, and many of the ranch buildings have been restored for use as a museum. There are no campgrounds; a day-use parking lot provides access to the museum. Dogs are prohibited on the trails\, but many trails allow bikes and/or horses. The long trails and ocean views make the area a favorite of hikers\, equestrians and mountain bikers. Public beaches continue to the north in Coast Dairies State Park.HistoryThe first European land exploration of Alta California\, the Spanish Portolà expedition\, followed the coast in this area on its way north\, camping at today’s Majors Creek (now the northern park boundary) on October 18\, 1769. On its way through today’s Santa Cruz County\, the explorers bestowed a few important names which survive today: Pajaro River\, San Lorenzo River and Santa Cruz. On the return journey to San Diego\, the party camped at the same spot on November 21. Franciscan missionary Juan Crespi noted in his diary the difficulty of moving along this part of the coast: “The road on this march was very troublesome\, on account of the frequent gulches along the way.”When Mission Santa Cruz was established in 1791\, the area became part of the mission pasture lands. Secularization of the missions in 1834 divided the mission lands into large land grants called “ranchos”. Wilder Ranch was part of Rancho Refugio\, a Mexican land grant of 1839. Historic buildings include part of the adobe rancho house built around that time by rancho grantee Jose Bolcoff.

SUMMARY:All About Theatre The Addams Family
DESCRIPTION:All About Theatre The Addams Family\nOctober 27 – November 4: \n7pm on 10/27\, 28 & 11/2\, 3\, 4\n2pm on 10/28 & 11/4 \nTHE ADDAMS FAMILY\, a comical feast that embraces the wackiness in every family\, features an original story and it’s every father’s nightmare: Wednesday Addams\, the ultimate princess of darkness\, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet\, smart young man from a respectable family– a man her parents have never met. And if that wasn’t upsetting enough\, Wednesday confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now\, Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before– keep a secret from his beloved wife\, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents. \n\n\n\n\n\nSynopsis \n\n\n\n\n\nHundreds of years ago\, the Addams family ancestors came from the old country and settled on a plot of land in what is now New York’s Central Park. This was\, of course\, long before it was a park\, when it was still wilderness. The family flourished for many generations\, and eventually\, a huge house was built where a great Spanish oak\, the Addams Family Tree\, had been planted to protect the ancestral graves from such annoyances as sunlight and tourists. \nAs the curtain rises\, the last dead leaf of autumn falls from the Family Tree\, and all is right with the morbid\, macabre world of Gomez\, Morticia\, Fester\, Grandma\, Wednesday\, Pugsley and Lurch. They’ve gathered – where else? – in the family graveyard\, to celebrate life and death in a yearly ritual to connect with their past and ensure their future. They seem at peace\, not just with each other and their inimitable\, unchanging Addams-ness\, but with their dead ancestors\, too – who emerge from their graves on this night each year to join in this celebration of continuity. But\, at the end of the ritual\, Fester blocks the ancestors’ return to their graves. Those unchanging Addams family values are about to be tested. \nTickets: https://allabouttheatre.org/buy-tickets/
