SUMMARY:Santa Cruz B.L.A.C.K. Film Series
DESCRIPTION:Santa Cruz B.L.A.C.K. Film Series\nTuesdays\, 6:30pm-9pm\, February 20\, March 19\, April 16\, May 14\, Wednesday\, June 18\n \n\n\n\nSCPL is pleased to partner with Santa Cruz Black on their  Santa Cruz Black Film Series to provide additional opportunities to watch and discuss these important films. \nB.L.A.C.K. On Screen is a five-documentary film series focusing on the themes behind our acronym BLACK: Building Legacies of Access in Communities of Kinship. \nStarting this month through June\, screenings will be the 3rd Tuesday at the Resource Center for Nonviolence and the 3rd Wednesday of the month at the Capitola Branch Library. Doors open at 6:15\, screenings begin at 6:30. \nWhose Streets? is February’s film. Watch the trailer here . Each screening will be followed by a discussion and/or Q&A. Some of the filmmakers will be participating. Stay tuned! \nABOUT THE FILM When unarmed black teenager Michael Brown was killed by a white police officer in Ferguson\, Missouri\, and left lying in the street for hours\, it marked a breaking point for the residents of the St. Louis area and beyond. Uniting people from the community and across the nation\, a movement-propelled by young activists and Ferguson community members-was born. Told by the local residents and activists on the front lines fighting for justice\, equality and an end to police brutality\, Whose Streets? is an unflinching look at the Ferguson uprising and the movement that followed. \nThe series continues with: March 20\, Tell Them We Are Rising. The Story of Black Colleges and Universities explores the pivotal role historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have played over the course of 150 years. \nApril 17\, Against All Odds: The Fight for The Black Middle Class. Acclaimed journalist Bob Herbert asks\, “Have Black Americans had a fair shot at the American dream?” He probes the harsh and often brutal discrimination that has made it extremely difficult for African-Americans to establish a middle-class standard of living\, while also exploring the often heroic efforts of Black families to pursue the American Dream in the face of unrelenting barriers. \nMay 22\, The Taking of Harris Neck: 80 years of Injustice for the Gullah People. The stunning marshlands of Harris Neck\, Georgia have a tragic history. In 1942\, the US government took 2687 acres of land inhabited by descendants of freed slaves to build an airbase. The government promised to give the land back after the war. Now 80 years later the community is still fighting to get their land back. The Taking of Harris Neck tells a story of trauma and racism – and the perseverance to overcome against all odds. \nJune 19\, Decendent follows decendents of the survivors from the Clotilda\, the last ship that carried enslaved Africans to the United States\, as they reclaim their story.

SUMMARY:WPENS Preschool Open House
DESCRIPTION:WPENS Preschool Open House\nTuesday – Saturday\, February 20 – 23\, 9:30 – 11am \nCome check out the Westside Parent Education Network co-op preschool open house. Swing by anytime between 9:30 and 11:00 and see the magic that happens at WPENS’ pre-school! \nWe are currently enrolling for both spring 2024 and fall 2024. \nWPENS is a school for families. Since 1970\, WPENS has been providing a sense of community that supports your whole family\, valuable social skills for your child\, learning through play and incredible parenting seminars and speakers.  Our non-profit parent cooperative has been an integral part of Santa Cruz offering quality education to both child and parent. \nYou\, as a parent\, are able to support your child learning valuable life skills of sharing\, conflict management\, and cooperation.  Parent or caregiver involvement in the school provides a higher adult to child ratio and a lower tuition cost. \nParents and caregivers gain parent education through seminars and speakers at meetings\, and children gain experience at an amazing preschool. \nPreschool Program\nWhile parent education is the focus for the adult\, learning through play is the work of the child. At WPENS\, children freely choose from a variety of materials and play equipment depending upon their own interest\, learning style\, level of readiness and mood for the day. Allowed this freedom of choice\, the child’s play can be free\, spontaneous\, vigorous and creative. \nHands-on learning engages children in developing their whole being allowing them to become capable and enthusiastic learners. The curriculum for children includes art\, music\, dramatic play\, emergent literacy\, science\, math\, social development and large & fine motor activities. \nOur positive discipline philosophy teaches respectful and effective ways of promoting cooperation. The conflict resolution skills that children learn will help them in their relationships with other people in and out of school for the rest of their lives.

The variety of fruits\, vegetables\, flowers\, pastured meats and other products is swoon worthy. \nThe Downtown Market also spotlights a large variety of up-and-coming\, unique cultural food businesses. This weekly spot may serve up the most diverse selection of ethnic foods in the county including momo\, naan and curry\, Japanese fermented misos\, Eritrean dishes\, crepes\, El Salvadorean pupusas\, traditional Italian cookies\, fish and chips and long-ferment fresh breads. Shopping at the Wednesday market is a wonderful way to support regional responsible farms and small local businesses. Fill your grocery bags!
