Opera: The Fairy Queen

Friday, May 27,  7:30pm & Saturday, May 28,  7:30pm

A semi-opera by Henry Purcell based on Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Henry Purcell’s The Fairy Queen in a special outdoor production to celebrate the return of fully-staged, live opera at UCSC. The Fairy Queen, considered a semi-opera, was written as incidental music for William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. In this version of the work, Purcell’s beautiful vocal and instrumental movements are interspersed with dialogue from Shakespeare’s play in a magical evening. UC Santa Cruz singers and actors are joined by members of Visalia’s Sequoia Symphony. Bruce Kiesling conducts, Sheila Willey directs.

The production brings together designers both familiar and new. Lighting design is by Legend Theatrical’s Dave Dunning. Scenic design by Visible Gravity’s Sean Riley. Hair and makeup design by Santa Cruz Shakespeare’s Jessica Carter. Sound design by Live Oak Audio’s Brook Nielsen. Costume design is through our longtime collaboration with Academy of Arts University in San Francisco.
