Violin for Kids
Fun, affordable Violin and Viola lessons from a world travelled musician (Speakeasy String Quartet, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=st6lyPPJKUQ) and published arranger whose family is steeped in string playing (cousin of Violinist and Curtis Institute Director Efrem Zimbalist, and of Lisa Gutkin, Violinist of the Klezmatics).
Just moved to Santa Cruz from Silicon Valley, string teacher at Bridgepoint Music in Menlo Park for seven years. Over 20 years total of teaching experience specializing in young beginners ranging to adults. Stress not only on playing but also on Music Theory and music history as an integral part of lessons. I aspire to the gentle, patient teaching style of my childhood teacher, Olga Bloom, founder of Bargemusic in Brooklyn. Lessons taught either on the internet or in outdoor, distanced settings.
David Laurence Zimbalist (Violin4kids.com) is from New York, and has a very artistic family, which includes: Efrem Zimbalist, Sr. and Alma Gluck, founders of Curtis Institute, the actor Efrem Zimbalist Jr, Stephanie Zimbalist, Grammy Award-winning Violinist Lisa Gutkin (the Klezmatics) and Academy Award-winning movie Producer Sam Zimbalist.
David Zimbalist studied Viola, Violin and chamber music for ten years with Olga Bloom, founder of Bargemusic, Ltd., in Brooklyn, New York. He continued studies in California at UC Santa Cruz with Roy Malan and Ruth Freeman, Concertmaster and First Violist, respectively, of the San Francisco Ballet. He also took advanced music theory with composer and George Crumb biographer David Cope.
Zimbalist attended Graduate School at UCLA in Historical Musicology to research the Viola D’Amore, and studied this instrument with Dr. Daniel Thomasson, President of the International Viola D’Amore Society. He has toured the United States and Europe as violist with productions of The Music Of Andrew Lloyd Webber, Jesus Christ Superstar, and as violinist with Peter Pan.
Zimbalist formed The Speakeasy String Quartet to specialize in his note-for-note transcription arrangements of early jazz from the 1920’s and 30’s. Their first CD, Rumble Seat Music, was produced by Academy Award-nominated Sound Designer Ren Klyce (Fight Club). The group has performed to standing ovations at the New Orleans Jazz And Heritage Festival. Zimbalist’s arrangements and musicological research has also been featured in Strings Magazine.
David Zimbalist is also a music educator with over 20 years experience teaching children age 4 through adults.
